QR Codes Now Accepted by 43 States To Allow Paperless Pharmacy
AKE MARY, Fla., March 3, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- As healthcare providers begin to see the importance of digital patient engagement, VUCA Health announced today they've added Maine and New Hampshire to the list of 41 other states where pharmacies can allow their patients to opt-in to receive their medication information through an eco-friendly, digital platform in lieu of paper.
The company's "Going Green" campaign aims to address low health literacy while helping pharmacies save on costs associated with providing medication information on paper. They've been working directly with Executive Directors and State Boards of Pharmacies to advocate for a digital alternative to traditional methods of providing prescription information. The company estimates that in 2018, pharmacies in the U.S. may have spent more than $294 million on paper and toner alone. It's no surprise to healthcare providers that patients often misplace, or intentionally discard, the multiple pages of information they get from their pharmacy. VUCA's paperless solution, called MedsOnCue, allows patients to access digital information about their medication through a QR code printed on their prescription bottle. With Google and Apple's integration of a QR code reader into their camera apps, patients can now gain digital access to information they'd normally receive on paper, by simply opening their camera app on their smartphone or any other QR code reader. Additionally, patients can access a short video about their prescription and even view a high-resolution image of their medication, reducing the chance of a dangerous error.
"Our key to addressing the nation's health literacy problem is to provide a way for patients to watch a trustworthy, quick, 2-minute video about their medications," said Richard Waithe, PharmD, President of VUCA Health. "Allowing patients to watch a video to learn about their medication is a great alternative to the stacks of papers, often in small print, they normally get with prescriptions."
The company has also been given the go-ahead by the FDA to allow for electronic delivery of mandated medication guides for certain prescriptions.
Garden Record-Keeping Web App Uses QR Codes and Smartphones Over the past decade, Nancy Duffy has built a lovely ornamental garden but has been frustrated for years with her plant tags. “With thousands of plants in my garden it’s hard to remember all the names,” said Nancy. “I walk the garden with my gardening friends and crawl around the ground looking for a tag, which may or may not be there and if it is, it may not be legible anymore.”
A professional garden designer and avid gardener, Nancy came up with a solution. Muddy Boots Plant Tags are durable plant tags that can be scanned by a smart phone, retrieving information about the plant that the gardener has input into the Muddy Boots Garden Record-Keeping Application. “Instead of crawling around to find the tag and reading the tag, often at ground level, you scan the tag and read information about your plant on your phone,” said Nancy.
The Muddy Boots Garden Record-Keeping Application allows gardeners to organize all the information about their garden in one place, accessible from a computer, smartphone or tablet. “Gardeners can keep much better records about their plants including journal notes and pictures. No more tattered notebooks and file folders,” said Nancy. “And the gardener can access the data from the house or out in the garden. The interactive, scannable plant tags can be scanned by the gardener or visitors with a simple QR code scanner on a smartphone or tablet.”
Mignon Durham is an avid gardener using Muddy Boots Plant Tags in Asheville, NC and she says, “I am a detail geek, with a bent to documentation, photography, and maintaining folders of plant tags and sales receipts. Muddy Boots Plant Tags is the perfect solution. Muddy Boots Plant Tags now has all my plant and garden history (three years of information now available on my iPad, iPhone, or laptop). Furthermore, any plants with a QR coded plant tag can be scanned on a smartphone while out in the garden for access to its entire record.” Bullington Gardens, a 12-acre horticultural education center and public garden in Henderson County, NC, has recently selected Muddy Boots Plant Tags. “We are excited to implement Muddy Boots Plant Tags. The Record-Keeping Application will allow us to better organize information about our remarkable plant collection and the plant tags will make that information accessible to our many visitors,” said John Murphy, Director of Bullington Gardens. Muddy Boots Plant Tags are made of aluminum and feature a unique QR code that links it to the plant data in the Garden Record-Keeping Application. The tags are durable and made to hold up for years in the elements. These plant tags are available in bundles of five at the website. A purchase of plant tags is not required when using the Garden Record-Keeping Application; however, the plant tags are necessary for scanning plants while out in the garden. The Muddy Boots Garden Record-Keeping Application is free for gardeners with up to 25 plants and 50 photos. Gardeners with more plants and photos may purchase a subscription for $4.95 per month, or $49.95 per year allowing up to 500 plant records and 5,000 photos. There are higher level plans for larger gardens described at the website. All levels include unlimited plant and garden journal notes and are “Ad Free” - no ads whatsoever appear in the Garden Record-Keeping Application. How QR Codes Help Businesses Go Green
Reduce. Recycle. Reuse. These three words often serve as the catch phrase for many community recycling programs. But when businesses decide to go green, because of their size, they often have a greater ability to affect the environment. And that's where QR codes are playing a bigger part. Business initiatives to save energy and reduce consumption are nothing new. For quite some time companies large and small have looked for ways to use fewer resources without affecting daily operations or overall profit. With the proliferation of mobile devices, many companies are gravitating toward QR codes as a way of providing information and resources for both employees and customers without a lot of unneeded paper or packaging. Here are a few strategies coming to the forefront in the business community. Optimizing packaging materials As anyone who's made a consumer electronics purchase knows, buying almost any type of electronic gizmo means plenty of manuals and user guides. Often printed in multiple languages and in very small type, most of this information ends up unused and wasted by the average consumer. That's why many people working in the world of product packaging are turning to QR codes to achieve a variety of goals. For example, one sheet of paper - featuring multiple QR codes - can replace hundreds of pages. Instead of printing how-to manuals and user guides and including them with the purchased product, consumers use the camera on their mobile device to scan the 2D codes and access needed information online. Access up-to-date information from anywhere Companies who send technicians, salesmen, and specialists out into the community, providing field installations, repairs, and other services, have begun to see the value of using QR codes for their employees and contractors. Instead of providing multiple binders full of data for each worker, technicians can now access just about any database using just a smartphone. That means field manuals are always up to date and pages don't have to be thrown away or reordered. Salespeople don't have to carry large catalogs, and their companies save on printing costs.
And with the advent of so-called "managed QR codes," it's easy to change the URL the code points to. Need to switch out the content without reprinting the QR code? No problem. And you'll also have access to web analytics, gaining the ability to track when and where (and by who) your content is accessed.
It's easy to go green when you have QR codes as part of your strategy.
